Spiritual Senses
Our five physical senses (hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch) are functionally related and connected to our spiritual senses. Not New Age or occult As children of God, redeemed from sin, it’s time to reclaim and redevelop the spiritual abilities God gave us!
Developing your spiritual senses
" Lk 16:10, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
How does this apply to developing your spiritual senses? " 2 Co 12:2, “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know — God knows.”
If this experience were “in the body,” which senses might have been in use?
If this experience were “out of the body,” which senses might have been in use?
Spiritual hearing
What experience did John write about in the Book of Revelation?
Rev 4:1-2, “And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’ At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it.”
Was this a physical or spiritual experience? Did he hear the voice in this passage physically or spiritually?
Spiritual sight
Eph 1:18-19, “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
Eyes of your heart
“eye” (Gk, ophthalmos): (1) literal eye; (2)
sight; (3) understanding
“heart” (Gk, kardia): literal heart; used
figuratively for one’s inner nature in general, or either spirit or psyche in particular. How else might we describe “eyes of your heart”?
What is the objective for opening one’s inner eyes according to these verses?
2 Ki 6:17, “And Elisha prayed, ‘O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
What did the servant see?
Did God “open” the servant’s physical eyes or his spiritual eyes?
Spiritual smell
2 Co 2:14-16, “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.”
“the fragrance of the knowledge of him”
“fragrance” (Gk, osme): odor, fragrance, pleasant smell
“the aroma of Christ”
“aroma” (Gk, euodia): sweet smell or fragrance
“smell” [of death], “fragrance” [of life] (Gk, osme): see above
Are these fragrances and smells physical or spiritual?
Spiritual taste
" Eze 1:1, “In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.”
Was this a physical or spiritual experience?
Eze 3:3, “Then he said to me, ‘Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.’ So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.”
Was this a physical or spiritual experience?
Spiritual touch
Lk 8:45-46, “‘Who touched me?’ Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, ‘Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.’ But Jesus said, ‘Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.’”
What did Jesus feel?
